Catching up on life...

Ughhh - yesterday I woke up with a nauseous headache. Ended up sleeping most of the day and even was tired enough to go to sleep by 10 PM. Today, just taking it slow - reading emails, catching up on my life. I do have friends I meant to spend time with this weekend, but so much for plans...

Found this great video (above) - not sure how to embed it, but will give it a shot. Don't know about you, but right now, my thoughts are moving toward what I want for my future and how to obtain it... grasp the dream... begin...

The Holiday draws to a close

Back from a marvelous adventure. Spent some good time with Mom - doing chores, running errands, dining in and out and just being together down at her place. She seems to be holding her own and I finally feel like I can breathe a bit. I really appreciate Melody coming with and doing most of the driving. She enjoys driving so much more than I do. Thank goodness she was free to join me.

Our new Pom, Shelby, is setting in nicely and getting more comfortable as an indoor beloved pet. Cierra is still having some jealousy issues, but over all, they are getting together well.

My Camp Crop weekend was great - didn't do a single layout, but made progress in my organizational projects as well as did a lot of project prep for a number of projects, build myself an altered art/journal binder (I like the binder because I'm often doing things out of sequence and as afterthoughts. Also, had gotten a nice little post-it note holder from Virginia Tech that I happily painted and varnished to be a cheery note on my desk. I do have photos but have yet to unpack the car. Perhaps later this evening I will make time to post them here for you. Overall, enjoyed the community time as well as my time alone in my room - serenity now!

Today is just computer catch up and maybe get through some of my emails and such before I head back to the office tomorrow. Should be able to get back into the swing of things now that I've had some time off to organize my thoughts.

Vacation, phase one - wonderful

Had a lovely handful of days with Mom at her place in FL. Got to also visit with Mike, Val, Fran, Connie, Jennifer, Kylie and her friend. Melody, my ace chauffeur and chef got me safely there and back with minimal incidents. We were able to knock out some chores and take Mom out a few times to take care of her needs. Wish I could have stayed longer, but this year I need more than one vacation.

Tomorrow I load up the car and am off to a scrap adventure. Not sure what I'll bring or accomplish but plan to take a pile and just explore. Should be able to get my journal assembled for use and start working it regularly. Meant to do that sooner, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. C'est la vie!

New Year - New Beginning

I'm feeling quite hopeful for this new year. I've been thinking about doing more art stuff and am starting a daily journal. I'd like it to be a more artist year. For the book, I want to just go where I will with it. Have a nice, smallish chipboard binder that I want to alter - but since I have yet to decide what I want it to look like, I'm leaving it naked for now. I'd like to play with mixed media and also in more creative writing. We'll see how it goes. The last thing I want is more burdens in the new year, but if I can keep it in perspective, I think it will be a positive thing. Signed up for a few daily journal prompt sites and the like. Looking forward to new expressions.

Anyhow, if you're going to be working a journal this year, give a shout out - let's encourage each other.

Tempus Fugit (Time Flies!)

So - it's been a heck of a busy 2010. Finished off all the course work for my Bachelors in Business Admin. Worked very hard and long hours on my day job. My middle daughter got married in October. And the year passed in a blur. Oh, and I closed my store at the end of May. I'm okay with all that has gone on. I'm hoping for 2011 to be less stressful and more creative for me. I want to find time to work an art journal, attend creative retreats, and connect more with my artist friends online.

Doing an online store is hugely rewarding in that you get sneak peeks into the insider side of the creative life, but also somewhat challenging when you're on a small budget, because you want more than you can ever have... It was a good 2 year run and I learned a ton and met some incredible people. Ignore any links that take you to my store - it is no more. I will try to update and make the blog fresh for 2011. Anyone know a blog designer who wants a canvas to display their work? Have them send me an email - this site needs professional help. LOL.

So, ending my year with some catch up on my various sites and creative locations. I've already been miles on the internet today. Been signing up to follow lots of cool blogs and will start adding in the links in case you're interested too.

My last stop was Studio Calico - that site has me aching for their everything but the kitchen sink kit subscription. They've got a contest on for sharing your SC wish list, so here are my thoughts from viewing their store:

- Sorry I missed the documentary kit - that is SO my style

- I have a passion for label stickers and journal card and all the ones in the store get me excited :)

- I have yet to try the Studio Calico misters but love playing with new toys, they're definitely on my wish list.

- Love Claudine H and have been wanting her sticky back canvas for some project ideas percolating in my brain. Got to play with some of her products with Tim Holtz at a trade show - I'm going to miss my entree to those!

- We won't even mention paper - my shelves are full but I still crave more and more…

- I've never seen punch revitalizer before but it sure sounds like something I "need".

- Love the cherry blossom trim and cherish punch set.

- Rub-ons: they're all awesome, but I think I'd say blue cameras, red typeset, and brown wood grain

- Once I get a bit more progress on my outstanding credit cards I'm paying off, I'd love to join your kit club - the products appear exceptional and I'm a gotta have it all girl.

What's up? I apologize for going MIA - just had a lot going on recently. I think I'm moving back on track. Just finished adding the photos to the instructions for the Mom's Diner cookbook kit I have for the shop - Jennifer Priest designed the original for Cookbookin' and I've kitted it for my customers with a few modifications since I was just designing off her photo from the display at a trade show. Now, I just need that recent shipment of printer ink to arrive and I can print it out and finish up these kits.

Two of my local customers have been waiting more than patiently for me to pull it together - ladies, the wait is almost over.

Got signed up for my 2nd to the last class for my Bachelor's - there was too much family stuff going on earlier in the year for me to focus.

More updates - Buddy, our poor old black Lab had to be put down - his pain level was just too high. Melody is moving out next week to her own place not too far away. It will really change our household dynamic once she leaves. I'm getting close to empty nest with just Maggie home. She's about done with her freshman year of high school. Doing well and looking forward to summer break. I haven't seen Amanda in a few weeks - between both our jobs, she rarely makes it over at the times I'm home. Miss her, but I know she's not too far away and doing well for herself. What more could a mom wish for her kids anyway. The letting go sure is hard though.

Last night - got to participate in my first Lime & Violet knitting chat on the computer - chat rooms are a lot more interesting with web cams - these ladies shared some great projects and books. Can hardly wait for the next chat... maybe I'll actually do something with my socks I've begun before then... we shall see.

Touching Base

Last night, I was so over my poofy, shoulder length dandelion hair that I went and got it wacked - really short... my vision wasn't quite as short as I got, but at least it's cool and easy to care for now. My daughter, Amanda, inspired me. She got hers cut the other day in a totally flattering swing look that nicely frames her face. Then again, she's lovely to begin with.

Change is good. At least now I'm cooler and can drive with the windows open again...

Busy season of life

Let's see - where have I been lately? Been working a lot of hours at the day job - worked a day crop 3 Saturdays ago, took a weekend trip to FL the next weekend to seem Mom and enjoyed a wonderful baby shower for my niece, Jenniworked another day crop yesterday. Thank God for my daughter, Melody - she did most of the driving on the FL trip and also helped me with the crops. I think I'm pretty free next weekend... the weekend after that involves some classes in NC at Donna Downey's event and a crop to finish my class projects on Saturday. What more can a girl ask for (except maybe a day to just goof off and relax...

One of these days I'll catch up and post pictures. We plan to do inventory and have a big summer sale at the store to make space for new items for the next season. I'll post an announcement once we get the site updated.

Hampster in the play ball

Does your mind ever feel this way? The thoughts jumble and spin and spin every which way? I find myself there more than a little. Change of season, new inspirations. I went to a knitters meet up group here last Tuesday night and met this really fun bunch of creative women. Sat there with my pen and clipboard, asked questions, took notes. I ended up starting a dish cloth in a simple basket weave pattern in cheap cotton thread from Michaels to remind myself how knitting works. Found the pattern on ravelry. Yes, another community I just had to join. What I like most about knitting is the portability. Unfortunately, I'm at that stage of life when I'm more likely hot than cold and summer is right around the corner, so I don't know that I will be doing much knitting for myself (maybe a sweater to wear around the office when the AC is on hyperdrive). I really want to try socks, but I gather they are considered advanced and I should master flat knitting first. A few dish cloths, though, and I'm going to have a go at socks, learn Kitchner stitch, and whatever else is involved.

At this meet up, I met a talented woman, Juanita, who spins and dyes her own fibers. While the knitting does seem like a great portable craft, I'm feeling drawn to the actual fiber manipulation. After the meet up, I ended up on ebay and won some yarn deals and even two drop spindles. Next time I see Juanita, I'm going to ask her about how I can learn the fiber world. Maybe she needs a student (yeah, right...)

Other than that, life is moving along. I've been gaming on facebook, working, working, working, doing a bit of knitting, and staying out of trouble. Since the crops in February, I haven't done much in the way of scrapping, although I'm starting to get the yearnings again and have gotten in some nice merchandising pieces for the shop as well as some assorted vintage laces etc. Oh, and at the office, they added a new shelf to our cubicles... since I really purged my ingredients when we moved to the new building in December, I had nothing to place there. Ended up at Michael's on my lunch break and got some shabby chic florals, a cream wire bench, a ball jar, a tiny wreath, a dream sign, and some birdies and made a little mental escape scene for me... very soothing and pretty... the urge to add beauty to everyday life sometimes overwhelms me...

Mom update - getting stronger, keeping stable. That's about what we would hope for her at this point in the process. Thanks to all who've been praying for her recovery.

Abundant Inspiration

I know I've been offline a lot - been to Florida to see mom quite a bit this year - she's working at getting stronger and staying at one of my sister's homes for now. Thankfully, my sister is a nurse, so she understands what things to look for to keep her well.

Anyway, one good thing that I've found in all my travels - there are some amazing art type podcasts. I've even stumbled across some great stuff on the itunes podcasts. I've tuned in to some neat women podcasters - and now I'm interested in adding knitting to my portfolio of interests and maybe learning some new fibercrafts. There are more interesting knitting podcasts out there than scrap ones at this time - I think I'm addicted to Lime and Violet - when those gals get to chatting, I feel like I'm hanging out with girlfriends having fun. Another interesting one was CraftLit - I heard the podcasters talk to two older men who are combining humor with philosophy. They tell how they got their book "Aristotle and the Aardvark" published. Anyway, I ended up finding both their books at Barnes and Noble and picked them up - they're on my to read list.

No, I'm not giving up scrapping - it's still my most fav activity, but I love variety and new challenges. Along those lines, while I can't swing Donna Downey's event, I did go ahead and sign up for a full complement of a la carte classes to meet some of my need for personal growth.

Talking about growth, I was thinking that I'd love to host or attend some online chats for other small shop owners - particularly ones who take their store to events like crops. Now, to just find some people who fit in these categories. If you know anyone who might want to be part of that, please send them my way.

Other than that, I have had a few fun crops I attended this year already and am so happy with how they went. Janie and Andrea did a great job at their beach event - they do the Virginia Beach Sunshine Scrappers group and have affordable regular events. I did manage to sneak away for a couple of hours the one afternoon and took a class with Jenni Bowlin. We did 4 pages and had a fun time. I always enjoy meeting new people, especially talented artists like Jenni. She's very sweet and I love the vintage feel to their line.

Once again, I will try to do better at more regular blogging... 2010 just isn't moving along quite as I had hoped. Ah well, just keep moving forward and stay positive.

Hard at Work

I've been back to work a while - this weekend, the store and I are at the Sandcastle hotel down at Virginia Beach oceanfront with the Sunshine Scrappers crop. Lots of fun ladies and some amazing work being done by them. Last night was fun - my CM friend, Lynn, hosted both a snack swap and a secret sister swap and the items looked great. I didn't get myself together in time to participate, but maybe some other time. As a matter of fact, I'm still trying to get the swaps given out from a swap I missed with my friends group in Eastover in January (I was with mom in ICU in Gainesville FL.)

About mom, she's got a trach now and is on the medical ward in a hope to get strong enough for her triple bypass and valve replacement surgery she'll need. So far, so good, but it's taken us 6 weeks from her leg surgery to get to where we are now and the end is still nowhere in sight. One of my sisters has pretty much put her life on hold and is staying with mom every day, sleeping at a hotel in the evenings. Tough times.

If my flakey brain remembers, I'll walk through the crop hall and take some photos to share with you all. Have a great weekend!

...that the road to hell is paved with good intentions... as you can see from my previous post, I had good intentions, but while I'm throwing out cliches - when man proposes, God disposes...

In case you were curious why I've virtually fallen off the face of the earth, I wanted to let you know that my mom is in ICU in Gainsville, FL VA hospital and has pretty much been there this whole month. She went in for something on her leg and ended up with pneumonia, a ventilator and needing triple bypass surgery. The doctors keep saying "a delicate balancing act" and for each step forward, we seem to take 2 steps back. I spent several weeks living in a hotel near her offering support. She had been somewhat improved last Saturday, so I headed back home, only to get a call from one of my sisters that she's aspirated and we're back to square one. Sigh. Still not sure how this will go - if you're a praying person, please keep mom and the rest of us in your prayers during this difficult time. Perhaps I'll be a better blogger in February - we shall see...

New Year - here we go again

So, who had big resolutions last year and did you actually DO any of them?

The weight and exercise thing for me was pretty much a bust - I didn't lose the weight I wanted, but at least I haven't gained more either...

This year, I'm going to be bold and actually write my goals down - finally going to use the book I made in 2007 with Rhonna Farrer at Creative Escape. I WILL make my first entry today before I head to bed.

Attended a trade show in Houston - took classes with Mona Gettmann and Cheryl Mezzetti from Creative Imaginations as well as many other companies like Prima, BoBunny, Prism, Just Rite Stampers and tons more - the manufacturer classes were the best I've ever taken and I had a ball.

Attended Teresa Collins Inspiration Unlimited Event - awesome teachers, fabulous projects and great friends and fun in Las Vegas (I have no idea where the teachers pics went on this computer.)

The Road to Hell...

As the saying goes, is paved with good intentions... that would be me and my commitment to blogging. Want my excuses - got a ton, but none of them are really compelling. Final exam this weekend - I'll TRY to get some photos of my recent accomplishments shared, but don't hold your breath. Found some fun new games at Facebook and got sucked in and now all I want to do is dig for treasure in Treasure Mania or quest in Castle Age. If you need a new addiction, please join my team in the games. Apparently, the more friends who join you, the more successful you become. I haven't quite found out all the ways to get that success in Castle Age, but I've been having a ball with my new team mates at Treasure Mania - for my team, the secret to success is update your wishlist often and share when you have more than one of an item. Big revelation, huh?

Life's A Beach!

Wow - 2 weekends in a row at the beach - how refreshing. There is nothing that calms me more than the sight, sound and smell of the ocean. My store and I spent the last 2 weekends at beaches - first in Kill Devil Hills and last weekend here in VA Beach. KDH was overcast most of the weekend as it recovered from the tropical storm that blew through although we did get some gorgeous sunshine on Sunday. VA Beach was beautiful (through the windows). There were some surfers in wet suits braving the cold water - and funny enough, we had croppers stop their creating to watch the guys getting in and out of their skins. Funny!

Now I get a break to wrap up my Politics 300 class before it's a new year. Melody should be working inventory so we can update the site and get some deals out to my internet friends. Be sure to check back later on. Tomorrow I'll be doing a gratitude post and offering a neat giveaway. See you then!

In Admiration of Bloggers

When I began blogging, I never realized how much time, energy and creativity it takes to do a really nice blog like many of those I subscribe to.

I'd like to say to all you mega bloggers - congratulations on your devotion and dedication!

It seems I have lots of excuses - no photos, too tired, too busy, etc. Actually, they're just that, excuses. We all find the time to do our A list items. I've decided to try to do better.

What's new?

We had a big tropical storm come through last week. It was inconvenient and there was plenty of rain, but no major damage at my house although others in our area did not fare as well. One friend even had a tree crash into their living room and they have to do some major structural repairs. Luckily, they have family in the area to stay with and lots of friends to help make it happen. Good people seem to be surrounded by other good and generous people, so I'm sure they'll get through it just fine. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

I spent last weekend with my store in Kill Devil Hills, NC. It was really wet for most of the weekend, so the ocean view was kind of a non-event until we were packing out on Sunday. The day warmed up, dried out and the sun was in all its glory. Totally beautiful. Mary Full hosted that crop and there was a good turn out despite the weather. The women who attended were a great mix and very friendly. I had such a wonderful time meeting them and working on projects plus running my shop. The shop did well, but then, I've been working hard to provide a nice selection for my croppers. I'll be taking the show on the road again this weekend to Virginia Beach oceanfront for another event. Janie Crouch does this one at the Sandcastle and her weekends are always nicely done too. I have a few fun classes to offer - 2 Teresa Collins books and a fun apron album book that would be great for gifting. If you find yourself at the beach this weekend, you should pop through and say hi.

Time for me to get ready for my day job. Counselling myself on blog responsibility - will try to post more often and even share photos...

Self Awareness

Here in Virginia, we had a number of offices up for vote. Myself, my husband, and my two older daughters all voted. Currently, I'm on the home stretch of my Bachelor's degree - taking POL 300 this semester. We're looking at all kinds of past events (Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan) and more and as I'm reading the text and listening to the lectures, I'm wondering where in the world I was that I am so little aware of all that occurred in my adult life?!

Where I am in my life now, I see that life really DOES go in seasons. I guess during my mommy phase, my biggest concerns were my househould work and the health and happiness of my children. Now that they're almost all grown (baby is looking at 15 now), I find myself becoming aware of the bigger world. Things that were once remote in my mind - like politics, economics, world affairs - now actually have an interest and meaning to me. I'm wondering how I went through so many years of life with my head so firmly immersed in my immediate world with no windows looking beyond.

Another part of my life revelations comes from iTunes. Apparently, there is a world of knowledge to be had there for free on podcasts and iTunesU. I've searched up a bunch of topics in a variety of disciplines and subscribed to many. There are some amazing people sharing all kinds of knowledge expanding discussions. I find I can listen to podcasts as I go about my daily work and still get tons accomplished. Suddenly, a whole new world of learning is at my fingertips. Remarkable! I've been listening to PRI (Public Radio International), podcasts on technology, application podcasts, marketing podcasts, casts from Harvard Business School, some fun arts and crafts casts, enterpreneur discussions and so much more. Anyone with an ipod that is not taking advantage is this vast world of knowledge is missing out on more than they can imagine! As a matter of fact, time for me to head to iTunes now and see if there's anything new for my brain expansion project.

Lately, I've been busy on other work and have fallen behind in my online world. Melody is helping me with Farmtown and I've actually missed several days at Slots! Who could have imagined. Co-worker is on vacation and I'm pulling some overflow to help. No issues, just keeps me really busy all day long.

I have yet to unpack the work laptop from the weekend away - I should get my photos uploaded - one of these days. Got 2 events coming up in November and I still need to complete the class packs and sign ups. Some days I am not sure if I'm coming or going.

Had a wonderful weekend away - worked on completing a number of projects I had begun in my recent travels. I was quite pleased with all I accomplished. The weekend was cold, rainy and dreary outside, but inside, I was in a place of peace and creativity. Wish I could have those times more often.

Yes, I know you're probably saying, how about showing us some of these fabulous projects you keep talking about... well, here's the thing - for some reason, editing and printing photos really doesn't excite me. I have Photoshop Elements, but it's still so tedious and there are so many steps. Wish I hadn't lost the web site for that one scrapbooker who tells how to use actions to do some of the basic photo edit steps easily. Without pictures, scrapbooks really can't be considered complete.

Ce la vie... one of these days I'll get "a round tuit" and actually photograph the projects to share.

Home from Travels!

I have had the most amazing several weeks taking incredible classes with some fabulous instructors. I now have tons of projects to finish. Part of today's duties - choose my photos and print so I can build some of these awesome starts.

Scrapbooking art classes are all well and good and the new techniques and perspectives I've gotten from them are totally wonderful, but until I add my photos and story, they're just pretty pieces.

How about you? Are your scrapbooks just pretty pieces or are you really getting into the exploring and documenting your life part? When the two come together - then you get WOW.

Back and Gone Again

Got back from Inspiration Unlimited - you'd think I'd have a good photo of me and Teresa Collins, but I've got to say, while she looks lovely, I think I need my photo guru daughter to fix me a bit before I want you seeing me looking like that.

The event was wonderfully done - smooth, well organized, tons of creative ideas and projects, shopping, and also set in Sunset Station in Henderson Nevada (a casino, in case you didn't know). Needless to say, I had an incredibly wonderful time.

Went to work yesterday. Today, I'm off again to Houston for a store owner training with manufacturer classes and a trade show. Again, I'm expecting to have an awesome time learning new things, hanging out with old friends and making new ones.

When I get back in town, I'll try to get some photos uploaded here to share the fun with you all.

Creative Explosion with Donna Downey

Had a marvelous weekend with Donna Downey and friends learning some incredible art techiques in 3 different, awesome classes. We did Bloom Friday night - lots of fun new mediums introduced to my scrapbooking. Saturday morning was Fabric Scrapbooking - again, a whole new adventure for me with lots of mixed media art and cool new techniques. Saturday evening, we did the Watercolor, Doodle class and once again, new concepts to play with and develop. Between all the creative input and the fun time with my friends, it was a terrific weekend.

Today's goal, catch up on life and bills and chill before I head for the day job tomorrow.

I love exploring new creative avenues and really enjoyed Donna's "yes" approach. It was very relaxing although my brain was near bursting by the time we closed shop Saturday night. Donna! Thanks for the awesome event - it was fabulous!

By the way, for those of you considering Donna's classes - I can't guarantee you'll actually come away from the class with completed albums, but I can assure you that if you go into them ready to learn and explore new avenues, you'll have a serious growth experience. I ended up getting her (autographed) Fabric Scrapbooking book, one of the skirt pages kits, the tag book kit and this cute pin at the top of the post.

Back to School

It's official - my last child has had her first day of high school - I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. As I was leaving for work this morning, I happened to be trying to leave my court just as the elementary school bus pulled up to collect the children. Even though it was raining here today, moms were waiting with their darlings and one mom stood under the hatchback of her mini-van to take photos of her child climbing onboard. It's been so long since our first first day of school, it is almost hard to remember. Another reason that scrapbooking is so invaluable. My two older daughters were homeschooled for several years before they all went to public school, so I don't have their first photos, but I did make a charming layout (in one of my many completed layout albums) of Mags. Got a little teary eyed thinking about it today.

Summer Draws to a Close

I am amazed at how swiftly time is passing. Margaret has gone for her high school orientation. Amanda has begun college classes. Melody is off building her own life. We didn't do much for vacation this summer - a brief trip to visit family in Florida and some cook outs, but that's it. I have most of my work/pleasure planned for the end of the year, though. Soon I'll be off with friends to take 3 Donna Downey classes. At the end of September, I'm attending Inspiration Unlimted with Teresa Collins out in Vegas - just got the cutest luggage tag as a RAK from some mystery person in the group and it's fabulous - it will go perfectly on the new weekender bag I got from my Creative Memories friend. The week after IU, I'm off to Houston for more manufacturer classes and a trade show with some other friends. I love this new area I'm moving into with all these creative connections. They really make it for me.

Also, I've been working on some class projects for the 2 crops I'll be vendoring at in November - one with Mary at Nags Head, the other here in VA Beach with Janie. They do such nice events and getting away for a beach front scrap weekend is one of my fav things to do. Will also be fitting in a bit of personal scrap time with other friends in and in January, we locals are off to our remote country retreat for a 3 day scra retreat that is just the best for catching up and relaxing. Not much out that way for entertainment, so hanging out together having fun IS the entertainment and it's fabulous.

I find the connection with my memories and friends really meets some of my personal socialization needs. Cropping is great therapy for a hectic lifestyle.

Real World Encroaches

I know, I know... I used to blog regularly. Then, suddenly I'm being drawn into the physical world, away from the computer. The computer becomes an expensive game machine as I spend hours in the dungeons of Fate (volume 2) battling monsters and gaining skill and attributes... yup, pretty much a classic D&D type of game without the math. And yes, I'm hooked. I've played over 40 levels in 3 different dungeons... but there are still levels to be had.

Other weird distractions - a book! Yes, I've actually completed reading a few novels lately. Before I began my virtual life, I read almost a book a day. Just a voracious reader. Now, if I get 3 or 4 read a month it's a big deal. Melody keeps me up on our current authors and she's usually bought their latest books before I've even finished the last.

Lazy Days of Summer

True confessions - while others spend lots of time outdoors basking in the warmth, swimming, having fun, I spend most of my free time in my studio. It's kind of a mess - but overall calming - soft blue walls, white trim, white curtain with battenburg lace accents, a narrow stained glass floral window above that my mother in law made, all my scrapbook supplies around me, and boxes and boxes of merchandise for the store.

Overall, it's my place of connection. Oddly enough, though, I've been a bit off with my virtual life. I finished watching all the seasons of Buffy (so sad it's over) and lately have been playing lots of hidden object games on the computer.

Thankfully, my local friends are still scrap happy and draw me out of my self imposed isolation on a regular basis. As a matter of fact, I'll be joining them to crop Saturday. I have yet to come up with a plan for what to do - guess I'll start thinking of that now and see about organizing my stuff tomorrow. I have a few projects in the works - it would be good to complete them. Maybe I can get some photos developed to finish my circle of friends mini book. Not sure what to put in the Betcha Didn't know one... I'm not that mysterious. Pretty much what you see is what you get, from my blunt speech to my actions. I'm not into pretending or speaking things out loud that I wouldn't say in person.

Anyway, guess I've rambled enough to bore you all. Store will be on the road for a crop August 22 in Hampton. Looking forward to hanging with my scrapper buddies and showing them the latest and greatest.

Speaking of latest and greatest, have you been catching those CHA sneak peeks? I'm sure ready for some power shopping for the store. If you're seeing anything awesome out there, please bring it to my attention for consideration. Has anyone figured out what that Cricut Gypsy is all about? That caught my eye...

Love my Fur-Babies!

Somehow, through the years, we've become pet lovers... it starts with a little kitten here, a small pup there and somehow, years later, we have a mini zoo.

My middle daughter, Amanda, has a guinea pig that shares her room.

We've got this massively fat female cat (she was normal size until we got her fixed) black cat Izzie. She was smuggled in one rainy day by my oldest daughter and we ended up keeping her. Speaking of my oldest daughter, she has a nack for picking pets with great personalities. Every pet she's chosen through the years has been wonderful.

Nine years ago, we got this sweet black lab puppy that has grown up to be a crabby old guy with some arthritis.

Earlier this year, Melody got 2 new dogs after her last one was tragically killed. She got a Doberman puppy and this awesome black and white Pomeranian puppy. Melody's last dog was a pom and somehow, seeing the pom and dobie together was just more than she could manage - we inherited the new Pom, Cierra. Cierra is so much fun - happy, friendly personality, tons of energy, loves to play... unfortunately, neither my cat nor dog is much into young dog antics. If our budget was better, I'd go buy her a playmate, but things are tight like for most of us... if anyone knows someone with a Pom that has a good personality and a lot of energy (and is preferably spayed) that needs a good home, we'd love to hear about it. I think Cierra would be oh so much happier with a similar age playmate who would enjoy romping in our fenced back yard or cuddling up on one of the doggie pillows...

Graduation Day!

I'm so proud! Today, my daughter Amanda is graduating high school. She attends Ocean Lakes High - there are over 500 students in her class. She's an honor grad getting an advanced diploma with a civics seal, math and science seal, and a technology seal. She was in a separate 2 year Digital Design program and also received her NOCTI Advertising and Design certificate! Whoo hoo! Lots of toots!

I am so excited. You'd think it was me graduating or something! My in laws and sister in law have also come to visit for our grand event. I am beyond elated!

Amanda is becoming quite the digital talent. She's even built her own site for her designs, although she's really not doing much promoting yet - still working on building up a portfolio.

Fun with Friends

Had a great, laid back weekend. Started out with a crop with some new friends Friday night - that was terrific fun - they were just my type of gals and we laughed so much! I really enjoyed that. Got my butterfly book about 1/2 done... then switched to a Lime Rickey card kit and made 5 cards. I still have a few to go to finish up, but I enjoy working kits and not having to over-analyze what to do next and how to get a nice finished product. These are about just the amount of concentration I need at a social event. It was the hostess birthday as well, so we had some tasty snacks, but the company is what really made this outing special.

I also ended up getting season 4 of Buffy on DVD. Spent a large part of Saturday reading a good book (Jayne Ann Krentz, Sizzle & Burn), then watched the first 2 disc of the season. Mark and I went out for Mexican for dinner. Maggie had left earlier in the day to spend the night at a girl friend's and Amanda went to prom with her boyfriend. She was totally lovely. Gotta get Mark to upload the photos he took of her/them.

Sunday was another day of leisure - knocked out my classwork and took the quiz for my Money & Banking class (wish she'd give us more than 5 questions on a quiz so I could get better grades). Paid bills, then back to the Buffy marathon. I still have 2 discs to watch before I'm all done with that season. Have to wait for next payday for season 5... ah, the trials...

Now it's Monday and it's back to the day job. I think I have enough time for one more episode before I have to leave... whoo hoo!

I've exhausted the Buffy episodes on Hulu... watched all 56 through season three - they don't have any others on the site at this time (boo hoo!) I understand I can find them for $15/season at Walmart... guess what's next on my to-do list?

Currently in week 8 of my college class Money and Banking. Got my paper turned in and we're screaming toward finals. This class seems to be going by quite quickly to me... then again, so does life! My middle daughter just received her high school yearbook - she's taking it to school today for friends signatures. Hard to believe graduation is right around the corner. So much going on right now... so little time to smell the roses.

Decided to attend an evening crop Friday. I'll be trying to complete my butterfly garden mini book from the current kit. Once I get it done, I'll share some pictures here with you - if it comes out half as cute as my vision, it should be nice. I picked up the photos last weekend so I'm ready to cut, glue and go...

Lazy Holiday Weekend

This one won the prize... watched the whole of season 1 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's kind of stupid, but a pleasant distraction. Yesterday was BBQ chicken, today, ribs. I've been cooking (a bit) - practically a miracle!

What have you been up to? Anything exciting? I've got a pile of photos to work with and a few projects on my mind. Need to get some friend pics and get that book finished. Will be working on my butterfly chip book from the current accessory kit - I've got a fun idea... now to get off my chair and actually make them.

Watched Fireproof yesterday on Demand... it was a very good movie - forces you to consider your life. Went to Walmart and bought the book today - seems like it will be beneficial. In it for the long haul...

The mind rotting alien commercial did it for me...

Since I'm married to a remote hog, I didn't have a lot of choices... in desperation, I turned to Hulu. WOW! I have a new fav web site. Now if my computer would just stay online, I'd be set. Got to watch the premier of Glee - that's definitely going on my DVR list. Then, I thought that since I've come over to the dark side and don't find vampires a problem (I've watched the whole Angel series from A-Z) I'd check out Buffy. Did you know you can watch each episode online with minimal commercials? I just put mine on full screen mode, turn out the lights and I have my own private viewing.

I think I'm in love. Like I didn't have enough things to do, now I have a new and easy way to waste hours of my time.

Sharing some layouts

I really prefer scrapping to trying to take decent photos of the layouts to share. Here are a couple I did with my Mark's paper kit - still have a few kits left in the store...

This one is my grandfather at 19 back in 1931. I thought about photoshopping out the caption on the photo, but decided it added character. My grandpa was killed in a mining accident in Pennsylvania many years ago before I left home.

This is a photo of my husband and I before we were married - we were at a New Year's eve party at the enlisted club on the Nato base in Naples Italy December 31st 1981. BTW, I had made the outfit I'm wearing in that photo - I was quite the little seamstress back in the day.

This is a fun mini book I made this past Saturday with a kit from Basic Grey - I only have a handful to sell ($20 each). Now to figure out which 13 friends or stories to share in there... decisions, decisions. BTW, this one comes with a pdf with full color directions for assembly including measurements. I found that using the Creative Memories circle cutter for the 2 main circle sizes worked well - I used the medium circle with the green blade outside edge for the backgrounds and the large circle inside red for the matts.

Spring around us

You can tell it's spring by the fickle weather - warm and sunny one day, cold and rainy the next. The trees are all going green and the cars yellow with pollen. Everyone I know is sniffy and sneezing from all the airborne pollen. Flowers, flowering trees and shrubbery are making Hampton Roads beautiful (when it's not storming out).

Had a great weekend with the women at the Newport News Women's Club - we did an American Cancer Society crop for 2 days. Not only did I get some product sold, but I also made 3 layouts with the next kit (that are rather fabulous, but I can't share until we launch May 1) and had some brief outings and fun with friends. Also, the weather cooperated and it was gloriously warm and sunny most of the weekend.

Today is my youngest daughter's birthday. She's now 14. Baby starts high school this fall. Four more years until I've met my baseline mothering criteria. It's fun how the role changes with time. This weekend I'll be at a crop (as an attendee) this Saturday and then having Maggie's ice skating party on Sunday (her choice). I don't skate, but I'll be sure to clear off my memory card so I can take plenty of pics of the kids all having a great time doing it. Now to come up with some "cool" skating party layout ideas. If you've seen any great ones, please send me the link. I need all the inspiration I can get.

Gotta get ready for work. I have a stack of orders to take to USPS on my lunch break for customers and tons of stuff that needs completion. Talk to you later.

Burger King - fun or offensive?

When I saw that square butt commercial, I was scratching my head and thinking what in the world were they thinking? Tell me how that sells burgers? Do we really need that kind of inappropriate behavior to lure in children? Do you really want your little sponge bob fans shaking their bootie and singing that obnoxious song? I'm really glad they pulled that one - it's probably gotten more exposure than it needed - and the children sure don't need the repetition...

Enough of that rant - off to the day job...

Lessons Learned

At long last, the pressure is off for 2008 - I've gotten all my documentation in place and am taking my files to my accountant today for tax prep. I have learned so much about record keeping and how to keep it accurate and current. Thankfully, Virginia has an online tax option and I've been able to take care of the business stuff there. Doing everything on paper is awesome tedious for me. Quickbooks drove me nuts. Now I have some clean spreadsheets and everything is meticulously sorted by category and date so it can all be reconciled. It's the biggest weight off my shoulders. Don't know why I put it off so long. Looking forward to Saturday when I'll get all of 2009 current. Life is good!

Can time go any faster?

Sorry I haven't had time to update lately. As a reward for being a bad record keeper in 2008, I'm having to do tons of work to get things organized to file my taxes - bad Theresa! I'm definitely going to do better this year - if I could just find a moment to breathe and get caught up.

Got to set up the store at Smitty's crop in Richmond this past weekend and had a nice time meeting their crowd (and seeing lots of familiar faces from other events). Took a little time alone to head up to Ikea for a browse. It's one of my favorite places. Even when I don't buy anything I usually walk away satisfied. They just have so many ideas that my brain loves it. Brought the laptop and was able to get some of the tax work and reporting done. Somehow, I just need more hours in my day - changed my alarm clock to get up 30 minutes earlier so maybe I can get my life back on track. We'll see how that goes. Now that I've seen all the Angel shows full circle, I have more free time in my evenings. Not too many shows for me to watch. If I could just focus and stay on target with my work, I'd be set.

Finished up that Descriptive Statistics class I took - managed to get an "A". It was very hard work for me and I'm so happy it's over. Just ordered my text book for Money & Banking - I think it starts next week. I'm doing that one online asynchronous again. Turns out that style works better for me than live for 4 hours a night once a week. Somehow, through life's changes, I'm becoming more of a morning person. I never would have thought it... used to be a night owl. Found that no longer works well for me. The joys of getting old.

Just wanted to touch base with my friends. Been ordering in all kinds of cool treasures for the next kit - I think you'll really be impressed. It's going to be the most fabulous kit yet! We've got some custom made embellishments from Etsy, tons of Prima, LOTS of paper, coordinates and even 7 different ribbons/trims! This kit is going to rock your socks off. Don't expect them to last long.

Australia Bushfire

I don't recall if I've mentioned this, but I've joined with my friends at Splitcoast stampers to help raise funds for the Australian Red Cross and their relief actions. Many of us vendors have donated prizes that are being rewarded randomly to participants. Be sure to pop by there and have a peek - your participation would be a big help. Our Puppy

I have a pretty uneventful life, but today, I wanted to show off our cute little puppy, Ceira . After Melody's last Pom was killed by an aggressive German shepherd, she ended up getting 2 new dogs to take her place - the first was Ceira - she's a 2 coated Pom in black - tons of energy, and Freya, a female doberman puppy. They made a good effort to raise them together, but Freya is a large dog and Ceira is tiny and Melody couldn't let go of the images of Persephone, so, now we have a new dog at our house. It's rather funny - we already have an older black lab and a very fat black cat, so the little black puppy matches the other pets.

She's full of fire - likes to chew through cords, shoes, underwear and anything else she finds around the house. Hopefully she'll get through this before she kills herself with something. She wants to be a biped and dances on her hind legs without any provocation. She drives Buddy (the lab) crazy by messing with his face all the time - she just wants to play and he's being quite tolerant. On the other hand, Izzy, our cat, has no tolerance for the pup - she will claw her when provoked. We let it happen because the pup barks at her and begins the agression - eventually, we're hoping puppychow will learn her place.

Ah the joys of puppies. If we can just get her housebroken, we'll be set. Happy days!

Fallen off the Face of the Earth?

Not quite, but I know I've been MIA a while now and am just starting to be able to breathe again. Tomorrow is my final for Statistics - hallelujah! I will be so glad to be done with this one. Next course is Money & Banking. I'll be doing that one back to the online asynchronous style - that suits me so much better - I can listen to the lectures as many times as I need and can do it in the morning when my brain is still somewhat functional. This night classes things really was hard for me. Somehow, I've transformed from a night owl to a morning person. The day job thing probably has something to do with that.

The store - well, we set up at a Relay for Life crop this past Saturday and I was able to get a lot of work done on getting my paperwork in order for our taxes. Need to wrap that up asap. Melody has the store laptop and all the products and is supposed to be updating the store inventory with all the extra products. I've had lots of new stuff come in but haven't gotten around to sharing with my online friends. We're looking at some fun stuff for our April kit - just waiting for a bit more fundage so I can place the orders. I think you'll really be impressed with it - we're getting some special design items from several creators at Etsy along with a fabulously fun batch of papers and embellishments I'm sure you'll love.

Sunday - yuck - watched all the series one episodes of U.S. of Tara on Showtime on Demand - it's like driving past a car wreck - you know you don't really want to see any blood and gore, but you can't help but slow down and take a peek. Anyway, during the show, I developed a puking headache and ended up sleeping the afternoon away with some pain killers instead of doing the newsletter like I promised. I really need someone to be an editor for me and take over that duty - I can't seem to pull all these things together. I know once I'm done with that test tomorrow I'll be feeling so much better to have that off my load of things to do. Don't give up on me yet, I'll get there - I promise.

Catching up

I had a great weekend at the beach cropping with the local ladies. We did the Teresa Collins Documents project and the Bo Bunny Recipe Binder class. The TC class went together a lot faster than the Bo Bunny since that one involved a lot of cutting, but both projects came out really nicely.

Been busy with shipping out orders, trying to learn statistics and put together a paper for that class, and working my day job and the store. Needless to say, I've been a slacker on my blog, but hope you'll forgive me. I'm working on a cool class concept for future crops and am pretty excited about it. A Great Weekend

We had a very successful crop last weekend - had lots of new faces participating and the ladies did some amazing projects! I was really impressed by just how much scrapping happened online. We've had a number of pre-orders for Zutter, I'll be closing that order on Friday so I can get their requests filled.

I'm also going to be at the Beach this weekend with my daughter and the store for a weekend crop at the Sandcastle hotel. I've got a number of fun classes and tons of great new products to share with everyone there. Looking forward to seeing you all again in person.

Bunko on Friday night was a blast! It was my first time playing and my first Mardi Gras party - had a wonderfully fun time - jambalaya, hushpuppies, hurricanes and king's cake as well as new friends and lots of fun. I've definitely got to play bunko again.

Tonight is a school night for me - professor posted midterms and I did very well (over 100). It's a relief when you "get it". Now to start the last part of the term. Only 4 more classes to go after this one. Whoo hoo.

I know I've been erratic in my blogging - I'd love to share something really exciting with you, but at this moment, I'm slam out of exciting. I will be sharing my class samples once I finish the prototypes. I converted a bunch of old family photos to black and white and picked up the prints yesterday at Walmart for my Teresa Collins Life Documented class. I really love this project - she comes up with the most clever ideas! I'm also signed up for the Inspiration Unlimited event she'll be at in Las Vegas - I think it's the end of Sept or beginning of October - guess i need to get on the ball with figuring out the exact dates and making my arrangements. I know it's going to be a terrific time with great teachers and some of my friends from Creative Escape. Any time in LV is always a good time.

I know some of you have been anxiously waiting for the launch of our February Sweetheart Mega Kit... just wanted to remind you that kits ship on Monday!!! Whoo hoo! My daughter has been working hard on the newsletter. I'll have print copies to include in the kit and a fuller, more expanded edition available for download by anyone who might want to check it out. We're trying to keep the print edition to under 10 pages, but with all the creative talent on my team, I'm not sure I can do that and still show you full color pictures large enough for easy viewing, hence the digital extra. Be sure to check back on Sunday for the download details (BTW, where is a good file share site?) Also wanted to mention - I did a trial run of the kit with my local scrappers and the quantities in the store are not quite accurate - I sold a large number of the kits on hand. Since I want to have enough available for you, my internet customers, I've done a re-order - be advised, though, while the paper and most of the embellishments are identical, I've had to make some substitutions on a few items but be assured they are as good or better than the items shown in the kit pic.

Wanted to say hi to all my faithful followers. Even though you don't comment often, just knowing I'm on your list keeps me checking in regularly. Gets kinda lonely here on the internet, so it's nice when friends touch base. Time for me to gear up for the work day, but just wanted to pop by and say hi.

Telling your Story

To me, sharing your story when you scrapbook is one of the most important parts of the whole process. At the beginning of the year, I started a new topic on the boards at my site (see link below) and have been faithfully updating it daily with a new idea for story starts each day. I'm just about done with the first month and now I'm getting a bit challenged. If you have great ideas for journaling starts you'd like to share, could you please send them to my email rizamerk@cox.net? I'd be happy to give you a byline in the post if I use your ideas on the board.

Talking about bylines, my daughter, Amanda, is busy putting together all the art and articles for this new kit launch newsletter. This edition will have so many ideas your head will blow up. I've decided to make the pdf file available to anyone who would like to check it out. If you share newsletters or such online, please drop me an email and tell me where you store them for easy download. I would appreciate your feedback.

Wordle

Have you checked out wordle.com yet? It's a free online tool that lets you input your own words or text then change font and colors and mix it all up in a number of layouts. Here is a sample I did using some Christmas photos of my children. Let me know what you think - and yet, I know it's incredibly simple. I tend to go that way every now and then.

Productive Cropping

I had a very successful weekend away and was able to relax and get a lot of layouts done. Most of my layouts are done with photos I've taken, but since my dear brother didn't invite me to join them in Key West for their wedding, I only have these professional photos from the event to scrap. The two page spread is a direct scraplift from the paper packaging material. For the blue frame in the single page spread, I used the negative from a large mat I cut with my cricut. I had a small scallopped edge image in my head but couldn't get it translated to the machine. Also, has anyone had success with the deep cut blade? I have not been able to get it to work in my cricut yet. Even loading the chipboard is a bit of a challenge. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Back to Reality

My weekend away was awesome. I was able to do 2 mini albums, 16 pages and 2 cards. Meant to have the photos ready to share here with you, but haven't gotten that far yet... maybe tonight ... then again, my hair dryer is still stuffed in the back of the trunk with half of my supplies, so possibly not. It was a very relaxing, productive time away with my local friends. These away times really help me with perspective. Having hours of uninterrupted cropping is just such an awesome thing.

We got a call today at quarter to six (in the morning!) from our school system... since it MAY snow this afternoon, they've decided to close school for today. Wow huh? I recall driving my kids through icy streets and ground blizzards in South Dakota to attend school... guess it's all about your expectations.

I've had a really aweseome response to the February kit and will be doing a second run order since so many of the first batch are already sold. Just need to get my stuff together. Shame work didn't call off today. Ah well. Patience is a virtue.

Time is escaping!

I can't believe how the days are slipping by. Seems the busy time of year that was Christmas might have just been the start of the busy time of LIFE! I had meant to blog each weekday, but failed in my attempts the past 2 days - I think I'm going to have to set my alarm for an hour earlier.

Today's discussion - college. Last night was my first class in Descriptive Statistics. I did something radical for me and attended in person. For the past several years, I've only done online asynchronous format classes. This one is each Wednesday from 6:15 - 10 pm. The only complaint was the heat was too high - toward the end, I started feeling sleepy. This is a computer lab class so the monitors were a look around factor. The prof is rather short, so it was a challenge to keep him in view. I think I might like this class. Math generally gives me hives, but last night went okay. This guy is uber qualified - he's got a PhD in some obscure technical field that made my brain spin in circles when he said what it was. He's had a career in various engineering fields including nuclear and city planning as well as doing quality analysis management for the military. His stories are fascinating. Apparently, he had a lively intellectual relationship with Demming of TQM. I've read about Demming in my textbooks on quality control. Cool to hear of him as more than a reference in a text book.

I may or may not get a post in tomorrow. I'll be packing up for a weekend away with my scrappy friends, so I'm not sure if I'll remember to post in the morning. If not, I'll catch up with you all on Monday. This place we go to is rather remote with no tv, telephones or internet. Very rural and restful. I really need the break. I plan on bringing my camera and doing some photos of project to share with you here. I'll try to get my flicker gallery link to function on the site as well.

Working is awesome busy - not much time to breathe or even look at personal emails - some days I don't even make it out for lunch. Such is life. Catch up with you later!

I know today is going to be a long day, because last night I stayed up to watch the new episodes of both Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. 11 pm is past my bedtime, but I had to see them.

Grey's Anatomy - the whole Denny thing is just too stupid - they need to phase him out - it's ridiculous. Also, rather hilarious that Alex humors her as though she was mildly psychotic. Shepard still leaves me cold - he just doesn't do it for me. I hope the Yang thing will resolve soon - the drama reminds me of high school cliques.

Private Practice - this one was quite good. I like Addison's new hairdo. The Violet center of attention thing is rather odd considering what a strange bird she is, but at least it's interesting. The whole autism/vaccine thing was very sad. Having the one boy die was quite the dramatic lesson that common childhood diseases can have catastrophic effects. I never thought measles was all that...

Have you seen this show yet? I only recently stumbled across it in my tv viewing and am compelled to watch. Thank God for DVR. Somehow, the writers have caught my imagination with their math professor and my number phobia is receeding. Once upon a time, I was a good math student - it didn't come naturally, but I have the ability to grasp it. I was even an electronics tech in the Navy for 10 years and a lot of my lower level college credits are in math... then comes children and suddenly, math is hostile territory and my wits escape out the window.

Anyway, I've been plugging away a class a quarter toward my Bachelor's in Business Management and avoiding the Descriptive Statistics class. All of the classes I've done since I started with Strayer several years ago I've done in their online asynchronous environment. Got A's in everything so far except for a B in Finance. Thanks to Numbers, I'm ready to have a shot at an in person, instructor led course. I'm hoping that I'll be able to connect. I can teach myself most anything, but I'm not sure how I'll do with weekly classes (4 hours once a week) after working all day... guess we'll see how it goes...

Scrappy Goals 2009

Ah, goals. Once upon a time, I gave up setting goals because it seemed I rarely accomplished them and they ended up being a burden. Saturday, I went to a 17 hour pajama crop and was able to complete 14 pages. Based on that number and that I seem to crop at least once a month, I'm shooting to complete at least 300 (365 would be even better, huh?) pages in 2009. And no, I'm not talking about just slapping pictures onto paper and calling it a page. Sounds like a worthy goal. What about you? Have you set any expectations for yourself this year?

In 2007, I got to attend Creative Escapes in AZ with Heidi Swapp and a lot of great teachers. One of those was Rhonna Farrer. In Rhonna's class, we did this really fun 21 day challenge book. Psychologists say that if you do something for 21 days in a row, it can be a habit. I don't know about you, but there are some healthy habits I'm adding to my life this year, so I'm finally ready to use my book as a 21 day true confessions journal.

New Year Reflections

Every time January one rolls around, I find myself thinking of the past and seeing where I am today. I love this song, because it asks the question that really is what new years means to me - this is your life - are you who you want to be?

In the past, this question always bummed me out. As a young woman, I thought I knew so much, was so smart, had so much ahead in the future. Am I saying my now isn't good? No, I have many blessings and good things, but the things I had once thought I wanted for my life haven't happened. Last year, I was discussing this with a close friend and her questions to me were:

1) What are you missing from your dreams that you still want?
2) What would it take to get those things?
3) Are you willing to take those steps?

Now that I'm a bit older, I see that some of the things I wanted will never be - the time for them is past. There are goals I still DO desire to accomplish and even new goals that I never would have imagined. The hardest part to living a good life is knowing what it is that defines good for you, and the willpower to do what it takes to get those things.

My vision of myself at 25 was to be an earth-mom - homeschool my kids, have our home our sanctuary, and just be that wonder mom whose home was the heart place. Our life didn't work out that way - I did homeschool my oldest for a number of years and even started the 2nd daughter. I was vegan for a year. We did the earth mom lifestyle. It was a good time for me. Life changed. We moved. I ended up putting the girls in public school and going to work full time. I held on to my disappointment for ages and let it color my whole life. I have new plans and goals for my future - I call it my five year plan. It includes a healthy lifestyle for me with regular exercise and plenty of whole foods. It includes finishing up my bachelors in business management - I have five classes left to complete. I have visions on a physical store and new lifestyle to all take place in about 5 years. The 5 comes from my youngest child. She'll graduate high school and go on to college in that time frame, and once she's launched, I'm seriously thinking about a new location and new life.

This is your life... are you who you want to be?

Holiday Recovery!

I've been so busy with all the things that go into making Christmas memorable that I've totally dropped sync on the rest of my life including my online friends, blog, tweets and even the business. I'm so sorry.

Christmas was fabulous. Now that my daughters are getting older and they're starting to get on with their lives, I'm trying to savor this time we have together - I know that can all change at any time now. The gifts I got were incidental (although quite thoughtful and nice to have). The gifts I bought for everyone else and the happiness they got from them is what makes it shine.

Our Christmas started on the 24th - we met at Capt George's for seafood feast - all 7 of us. The food was excellent and Melody's skinny little hubby won the King Crab Leg crown at our table - he ate an astonishing quantity of crab legs and didn't even get ill. I think if I hadn't had to say last call, he'd still be there chowing down... but since church began at 7 pm, we needed to leave.

By the time we got there at nearly 7 - the lots were full and we were directed to the overflow in the fields parking. If I had guessed that, we would have driven Mark's truck instead of my Corolla. No harm, no foul, though. The building was packed - we ended up about 7 rows from the top (I think the new building seats 3000 - see http://www.wavechurch.com if you want the visual and real statistics). I gather there were still many people who got there after us and the large foyer was also SRO. The service was great - the singing, my favorite part, was excellent as usual. We made it back out through the mobs and met back up at our house.

Mark had the camcorder ready on the tripod (last year's Christmas gift) so around 9 pm, we began the present sorting and opening. We took about an hour to open everything in a very civilized way with lots of fun discussion and such. Mark had to leave for work around 1030 ish. Melody and Kyle stayed a bit longer and we just had some visit time. I think I got to bed around 11 pm.

As usual, I was up early, around 6:30 when Mark got in. About 30 minutes later, the phone rings... naturally, it's not in the cradle and I am on a search mission - about the time I find it, it quits ringing. Amanda was crashed out on one of the recliners - her phone starts vibrating and wakes her up - it's Melody - she and Kyle are eager for us to get right over there to open our gifts from them that are under their tree... we girls get some clothes on (Maggie went in her pajamas) and head over. We brought the cinnamon rolls that went into the oven and then had the gift opening and some visit with them.

Once we got back home, I got the turkey in the oven and found some time to get a few songs and applications to my new ipod. Very fun. The kids came over for dinner at 3 and we had a wonderful meal and more good social time.

Ah, I'm going to miss this all once they're off and doing their own lives. Family is precious - need to savor it while you can!

It's the most busy time of the year!

This layout is a favorite of mine in it's simplicity. The paper is from Urban Lily - with such a great design, I didn't want to add too much. What I did add was a matted photo, the title cut on my Cricut Expression, and some tiny Heidi Swapp bling flowers among the design of the paper... voila. Sometimes simplicity says it all. The photographer who took the event photos even helped by adding the title and date.

I can't believe how much there is to do and how swiftly the year is flying by. I have one gift yet to pick up - that's my lunch break chore for today. I have one gift to finish creating (but it's very simple and I now have all the parts). I'm off tomorrow. I finished my college class (took the final Sunday, got an A). I still have to make final selection of new design team members (there were a large number of exceptional applicants and I can't have them all - narrowing it down is challenging). I'm off tomorrow (yippee - in case you didn't get that this matters to me!) Our plans are in place for Christmas and the money for our big dinner out is set aside. Melody came over yesterday and uploaded a lot of new papers and accessories to the store so that's a load off my mind. I can sleep in tomorrow since I'm off! Life is good, it's just hectic.

I've been trying to actually use up some of my stash of papers and such... this layout uses some Jenni Bowlin paper I had on hand - it looked rather antique-ish, so I paired it up with an old photo my aunt sent - she's the older girl, I'm the baby on her back... guessing by my size, this was taken in the early 60's at my granny's cottage on the Delaware river.

Okay, sorry, I don't have the patience to straighten the pic and crop it down to the right size, but you get the idea. The large flowers in this American Craft paper were just too cool not to cut apart. The papers were in the October kit. I made a number of layouts using the supplies and still have tons more to go. Even made a fun card keeper tin that I sent to my mom as part of her Christmas present - used up leftover paper bits from my cut outs to decorate the cards. Too easy.

Melody's wedding was just beautiful. See for yourself!

The justice did a lovely job and while it was on the short side, it was quite well done. Mark used the camcorder and recorded the whole thing so we can share with our families. Then we went to dinner at Melting Pot and had a lovely evening together with Kyle's parents. The food was great and the whole atmosphere was just terrific!

Hard to believe it's almost Christmas already! Last night, my youngest daughter's choir did their Christmas Concert. Margaret even had a micro-solo and did well. The songs were the usual middle school quality, but the spirit was right. It's so interesting to watch your kids grow up... now that she's in 8th grade, she's starting to have the look of her more grown self. Seeing her on the risers with the others her age, I see she's a good height for her age and she looked tall and slender. As a fat mom, I always am happy to see my daughters are not following in my footsteps in that manner.

I'll be doing some photos this weekend of layouts to share here with you. Also, remember, lots of great scrapping goodies on sale in the store to make room for all the hot new inventory I've been ordering.

PS - how are you doing on your Christmas shopping? I'm almost totally done - just 2 guy presents and I'm there!

Staying out of Trouble

Worked Friday so I avoided the temptations of deeper debt although I did manage to finish most of my holiday shopping online. Very satisfying to have it wrapped up. The wedding is approaching rapidly - we now have the time, date and place (12/12 4 pm) and I still have to get the photos for them to send out and set aside party money for after.

Spent most of the weekend marking down many, many items in my store for a year end clearance with discounts up to 40% on a large number of products. Gearing up for the ordering of new releases from CHA January 09. Pretty exciting time in the scrapbook business with all the latest and greatest. Be sure to have a browse and get some goodies to make your Christmas happy too!

Pressure Cooker Season

No, I'm not talking about old fashioned cookware, but rather how when we get to this point in the year, the days seem to go into hyperdrive to the new year. The pressure is on... tomorrow is the big turkey cook off. Got through my last big in person event for this year and Melody's birthday. Paid for their marriage announcements. Wedding on the 12th. Still need to take care of the photos they'll be sending out as well as the registry announcements. Need to remember to shop for Christmas for everyone - everyone is expanding at our house with a soon to be new son in law and a boyfriend for my 17 year old. Everyone should have at least one present to open on Christmas eve and I'm in torment trying to decide if I need to get 2 extra stockings this year. Not bad enough - how about the company I work for during the day is doing some layoffs that are being announced Dec 1 & 2. With corporate work force cuts, you never know when they'll decide your department is expendable - YIKES! In week 8 of my 12 week class - almost finals time. Need to finish and upload group project this weekend. I guess I need to let the worry go and move on... Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping, into the future... now if I could only in the lottery to pay for all this - guess I ought to buy a ticket once in a while, huh? BTW, the keywords on the labels here suck - they refused to let me have wedding - insisted on the Wedding Date - guess that's a movie?

Whale Watching

The weekend at Nags Head was beautiful (albeit cold!). Thankfully, we had a table near the beachfront window and had plenty of time to enjoy the glorious view. On Sunday, we even caught a glimpse of a whale out toward the horizon slowly cruising by as well as a pod of dolphins frolicking in the waves. It was so beautiful!

Celebrated Melody's 21st with dinner with friends at Ryans. It's a charming restaurant with excellent food. Melody had a pink kitty for her christening drink served in one of their souvenir hurricane glasses. Lynn had a hurricane in the same style glass. After the waitress rinsed them out, Lynn gave hers to Melody as well so now she has a matching set just what everyone needs.

The class went very well. Although collage type classes can get chaotic, between the written instructions and one on one time after the class ended, everyone learned to use the bind it all and went home with bound mini books ready for their holiday photos past or present.

Another Cropping Weekend Away!

Melody and I are off tomorrow for a Nag's Head scrap retreat. We'll be packing up the Explorer and taking the store on the road for some weekend relaxation. I am so hoping the papers I ordered arrive today or we're out of luck on them, but oh well.

We have these really fun Teresa Collins Christmas mini-book class kits that we'll be teaching at the retreat. Melody is building the prototype today. I only have a dozen kits, so it will be first sign ups only get to take it, but I think we'll have fun with it. Need to practice my bind it all technique on scrap so I don't wreck the real book. We'll see how well Melody's sample comes up - maybe she can teach the class.

Taxes and Business

As a new business owner, the state is requiring monthly taxes and I've got to say, it's my most dreaded part of the business. I understand that keeping track of your money in and out is critical, but it's the least fav thing for me. I'd love to hear from other shop owners on how you manage your inventory and keep up with all the paperwork that's required. Somehow, we're not doing well with piece by piece inventory - scrapbook paper and little odds and ends are hard to keep an exact record without a scan system, yet the hand scanner I bought shortly after I got the store died a sudden death in the middle of an event and we were left scrambling to manually price out all the products for sale. Yuck. I have QuickBooks, but entering into that is less than my favorite thing as well. I got 1/2 way through a month of receipts then surrendered in horror at the idea of quantifying each transaction in that detail. There's got to be an easier way... if you have advice, I'm all ears.

Christmas comes early

This school year, my middle daughter will be graduating. She's been deep into a graphic design program at school, so, for her Christmas/graduation/birthday present this year, I got her a Macbook. I let her pick out which one. She says nothing compares for graphics to a Mac. Generally, I don't spend that much money on any one kid for Christmas, but in this story, it seems right. This is actually the career path she's working toward (graphic design) so giving her the right tools seems like a smart choice. She's very happy. We rounded off our Saturday morning shopping trip with breakfast at Cracker Barrel - they have some smooth coffee there.

Another holiday plan we girls have is to take in the Russian Ballet when it comes to town. I think they're doing Snow White - we're planning on the week after Christmas. Should be a very pleasant event. I love the grace and style of ballet. Wish I was lithe and talented, but since I'm not, I'll just get lost in the beauty and share it with my daughters.

Hard to believe Christmas is almost here.

Twilight - finished book one

Okay, so, it's not TrueBlood (which unhappily didn't record while I was watching Dexter last night, so I have to catch it after work today On Demand). I guess I'm relieved by that considering that Bella starts out at 17. Took me the first 200 or so pages to find it interesting, but by the ending, I was hooked. After reading the teacher, I had to head out to Target and get the next book. This one is reading much easier now that we've got all the boring preliminaries out of the way. My brain keeps coming up with all these questions and scenarios - what if.. when will.. what about...

Dexter - I think he made a tactical error sharing that deeply with the DA. I see messy stuff in his future and a possible termination of a friendship/life coming up.

Weekend - passed to quickly. I ended up locked out of the quiz and couldn't take it - sent prof an email - waiting for a response. We drove up to Richmond yesterday for a browse through their mall. Nothing much jumped out at me screaming buy me, buy me. It was rather funny, though - the parking lots at the gun shops my husband visited were much more crowded than the mall. I bet the retailers are wanting to cry with the economy as bad as it is. Mark said they were 5 deep in the gun dealer waiting to purchase and that this is a much denser crowd than is normal even for hunting season. We attribute it to the president coming in. His regime is much less gun friendly and the hunters and others who get into guns are worried about what policies they'll bring in next year. Stock up and save, I guess. We had a large venison roast that we did in the crock pot. It was very lean (okay, dry). Anyone know some good venison recipes? Mark didn't get a deer, but his buddy did and since his freezer is full, Mark brought home most of the meat from the last event so even with a bad economy we won't go hungry. At least since it's not all that, it's not a huge overeating temptation for me...

It's been a long week at the office and I'm definitely ready for the weekend. While the week was busy, it wasn't all bad. Discovered the joys of pomegranets and got my youngest daughter addicted to them as well. Got a flu shot yesterday. Received the cute pink Susan G Komen lunch bag in the mail from Lean Cuisine (1/2 of the cost goes to research), got in the Christmas paper line from Sassafrass Lass for the store (TOO CUTE!), and got in my order from one of my distributors - rack, all the stickles to fill it, some adhesives and class kits for the crop on the 20th. Ready to go have some fun.

Looking forward to Saturday though... I've got a bit of Christmas shopping on my agenda. Need to take a quiz for my biz class. We're talking about driving up into the mountains to see if there's any color left on Sunday... haven't done that in ages... life is good...

Twilight

Everyone's talking about it... have you read the book? Are you planning to see the movie?

Melody and I had been ignoring it because we usually like our vampire books to be about adults, but since this one is getting so much air time right now, she bought the book. I've just begun reading it... want to find out what all the fuss is about. As long as it doesn't end up as sexually aggressive as TrueBlood (since the story is about high school kids) I'll probably end up enjoying it...

The future looks bright

I know the economy is horrible, but some things give me hope. My middle daughter is one of them. She's a senior in high school completing her advanced diploma. She's in her 2nd year of technical academy learning graphic design and says she's on target for honor grad. Besides doing well in school, she's also working almost full time at Target. She's learning all the departments and becoming independent. Watching your children grow to adulthood is a wonderful, terrible thing. Your hopes grow, but your heart gets nervous about them leaving you. Some birds need to be shoved out of the nest to fly, others practice while they're young and then soar off to their own lives and futures when the time comes. Amanda is the latter. I'm relieved to see she's doing so well and has such great internal motivation. My nest is starting to empty out... who knows what will be next.

End of another great weekend

Ah how swiftly the weekends pass...

Had a great day out cropping with some local scrap friends. I did a nice 2 page spread with some fun Margaret dress up pictures, a one pager with a vintage family photo, made the December overview calendar from this edition of Memory Makers magazine to populate with photos next month, prepped a 2 page Thanksgiving layout in the new Bo Bunny fall line of papers, and set up a coffee page scraplifted from another scrapbook magazine - just need to add the java photo... maybe I'll break down and wear make up one of these days and have a daughter do a photo for me...

Sunday went well too - watched Ghost Whisperer with my youngest daughter - she was weeping at the ending - guess she's growing up. Then I did my mid-term (got a 92), paid bills, and went to a friend's house in the afternoon to stamp a Christmas card and visit. She makes the best baked brie dish. I also got introduced to pomegranets, so now they're on my shopping list. I gather (from Tropical Smoothie) that they're supposed to have a lot of nutritional value. At the very least, it's another fruit to add to my rotation in season.

Got to watch my two late shows last night - Dexter then True Blood. Dexter is excellent as usual. True Blood is kind of making me sad. It's a lot different than the books and I kind of miss the characters I thought I knew from reading all the novels. Such is life, though...

Here comes the rain again

Second rainy day in a row. The trees have all turned pretty shades and I really wanted to take time to take some photos of the long, tree lined boulevard that runs through my neighborhood - the wet dark trunks and soft lighting make some gorgeous photos... but the rain just keeps coming. Around here, it's summer for a long time, a few days of fall, then winter, the rainy season sets in. Maybe I would be okay in the Pacific Northwest?

Fall is one of my favorite seasons. My only regret is that the trees won't cling to their vibrant wardrobe for just a few days longer. I love the crisp days. I love the smell of the leaves on the ground and the wisp of wood smoke from those with fireplaces.

Change is good, change is good, change is good. Sure hope that's right...
